The Irish Journal of Medical Science is the official organ of the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland. Established in 1832, this quarterly journal is a contribution to medical science and an ideal forum for the younger medical/scientific professional to enter world literature and an ideal launching platform now, as in the past, for many a young research worker. The primary role of both the Academy and IJMS is that of providing a forum for the exchange of scientific information and to promote academic discussion, so essential to scientific progress. The journal covers all branches of medicine and publishes papers applicable to the daily practice of the clinician and surgeon. Articles are written by international specialists in their respective fields, and their applicability is not limited to daily practice in Ireland. All submitted articles undergo strict review and scrutiny which ensures a journal of retaining high medical standards of publication. The Journal will consider for publication original research of relevance to the following specialists fields: Medicine - Surgery - Obstetrics - Pathology - Biomedical Sciences - Epidemiology and Public Health - Otolaryngology - Anaesthesia - Paediatrics - Odontology - Orthopaedic Medicine - Dermatology - Radiology - History of Medicine - Psychiatry - Neurological Sciences - Rheumatology and Rehabilitation - Ophthalmology - General Practice - Genito Urinary Medicine - Bioengineering - Health Informatics, representing all the 21 sections of the Academy.

This journal also publishes special/guest-edited issues. The peer review process for these articles is the same as the peer review process of the journal in general. Additionally, if the guest editor(s) authors an article in their special issue, they will not handle the peer review process
