自然发生的(野生)脊髓灰质炎病毒在美国不再流行。然而，未接种疫苗或部分接种疫苗的人如果接触到野生或口服疫苗衍生的脊髓灰质炎病毒，就有患麻痹性脊髓灰质炎(通常称为“脊髓灰质炎”)的风险。这种接触可能发生在前往尚未消除野生脊髓灰质炎病毒传播的国家或前往使用口服脊髓灰质炎疫苗制剂的国家期间。当感染高危病毒的旅行者返回美国时，他们可能会感染其他同样没有接种或部分接种过疫苗的人。
