During the last decades the journal has been the leading forum for original research in animal cytogenetics, including molecular, clinical and comparative cytogenetics. In recent years, most of its papers have been within the areas of genome research, including gene cloning and sequencing, gene mapping, gene regulation and expression, cancer genetics, comparative genetics, gene linkage and related areas. In addition, the journal publishes key papers on chromosome aberrations in somatic, meiotic and malignant cells of man and other animals. Also featured are the vast majority of the reports of the individual International Workshops on Human Chromosome Mapping, the reports of international human and animal chromosome nomenclature committees, proceedings of the American and European cytogenetic conferences and of other organizations such as the Workshop on Chicken Chromosomes. In conjunction with the International Cytogenetics and Genome Society this journal also accepts similar reports involving plants and invertebrates. Formerly Cytogenetics and Cell Genetics.
