《美国精神病学杂志》（The American Journal of Psychiatry)7月网络版收录的一项纵向前瞻性研究发现，童年创伤暴露可预示随后的精神疾病发病。研究同时提供了第一手的直接证据证明终止创伤经历可降低精神疾病发病率。

研究着重于一下几个问题：1、创伤暴露是否可预示随后的精神疾病发病？2、终止创伤可否终止精神疾病发病？3、童年创伤与精神疾病发病联系的方向性。

共有1112名年龄在13-16周岁的在校青少年参与此全国性的典型的前瞻性队列研究。在基线及进行随访的第3及第12月对童年创伤经历（如生理侵犯和虐待）及精神疾病发病经历进行评估。

结果发现，童年创伤和精神疾病发病间存在一种双向关系，即创伤可预示精神疾病发病，反之亦然。在对此种双向关系进行一系列严格的校正后发现创伤对精神疾病具有强烈预示性，即研究只评估在研究进行过程中，继发于创伤暴露后的新发精神疾病。研究发现虐待的严重程度与精神疾病发病风险间存在一种剂量-反应关系。此外，创伤的终止预示着精神疾病发病的终止，在研究过程中，参与者由创伤暴露而引发的精神疾病发病明显减少。
