研究者们选取了727例42至58岁健康绝经期女性，她们既往无CVD事件且冠状动脉钙化(CAC)评分少于50，也至少90天内未接受过雌激素或降脂药物治疗。给予其口服结合雌激素(o-CEE)0.45 mg/d或经皮17β-雌二醇(t-E2)50 mcg/d治疗，同时每月给予其口服孕酮200 mg或安慰剂治疗。主要终点事件为颈动脉内膜中层厚度(CIMT)的年度变化，次要终点事件为CVD危险指标的变化。

结果显示，随访至少1年和48个月时，分别有89.3%和79.8%的女性有CIMT资料。各组的平均CIMT增加幅度相似，为0.007 mm/y。

各组CAC评分增加的受试者百分率无显著差异。在接受o-CEE或t-E2治疗的患者血压水平无变化。在o-CEE组，低密度脂蛋白胆固醇和高密度脂蛋白胆固醇水平有所改善，C反应蛋白水平和性激素结合蛋白增加，但白细胞介素-6未增加。在t-E2组，胰岛素抵抗减少。治疗时严重不良事件无差异。
