来自布里斯托大学的研究人员使用挪威前瞻性研究HUNT对此进行了探究。该研究涉及了32452对母亲和后代以及27747对父亲和后代,随访时间延续到2009年。研究人员使用Cox回归调整行为和社会经济因素,计算BMI的标准偏差与亲本的死亡率的传统风险比。为了减少估计危害比时的混淆情况,特别是同时存在的不良健康状况,后代的BMI被用作父母自身BMI的工具变量。同时,研究人员使用三次样条评估死亡率 - BMI关联的形状。

随访期间共有18365名父母死亡。传统的全因死亡率,心血管疾病,癌症和父母自身体重指数(BMI)之间的关系是非线性的。死亡率在21-25千克/平方米的极端和极小值都有升高。与后代BMI的等效关联是正相关的。没有证据显示在低后代BMI的情况下,父母死亡率会升高。BMI每标准偏差增加全因死亡率的线性工具变量危险比为1.1895%置信区间:1.101.26),而常规分析结果为1.051.031.06)。

高体重指数和死亡率升高之间似乎存在因果关系,而低体重指数的死亡率过高则可能是由于同时存在的健康问题。传统研究可能低估了超重对人群健康的不利影响。
