例如中医学将马兜铃用于疏气活血祛风湿，但马兜铃含有的马兜铃酸是致癌物质，会增加癌症风险。

在两项刊登在《科学-转化医学》杂志上的研究中，来自中国台湾、新加坡及美国的研究人员对那些来自被记录与马兜铃酸有过接触的人的肿瘤进行了观察。

研究人员发现了一种马兜铃酸在病人 DNA 中诱导的损害的突变“特征”并接着用它证明与这种酸的接触可能会引起过去被归因于其它致癌物的肿瘤。例如，一种过去被认为是由吸烟引起的上部尿路癌症及一种过去被归因于某种慢性肝炎感染所致的肝癌皆具有该泄露行藏的马兜铃酸的分子特征，即在正常时罕见的“A-至-T”突变。

此外，研究人员还发现马兜铃酸相关性癌症的平均突变数比由其它如烟草等人类致癌物所引起的平均突变数要高几倍。在这些研究中所发现的突变特征可被研发成为一种癌症的生物标记，并可能促进用于早期发现接触马兜铃酸的工具的研发。

据了解，欧美以及新加坡等地在 2001 年到 2005 年间开始禁止使用含马兜铃酸的中草药，然而其危害并未消除，一是在禁令前服用此类中草药的人群中，仍然不断发生由马兜铃酸引起的上尿路癌症和部分肝癌；二是此类中草药虽然在许多国家已被禁售，但在某些国家的互联网上还可以买到。因服用含马兜铃酸中草药而导致肾功能衰竭的病例仍屡见不鲜。

2004 年，中国国家食品药品监督管理局（SFDA）根据对含马兜铃酸药材及其制剂不良反应的报道以及毒副作用研究和结果的分析，决定加强对含马兜铃酸药材及其制剂的监督管理，凡是含有马兜铃酸的中药制剂一律严格按处方药管理。
