Jocelyne DiRuggiero的实验室提供了一些研究中使用的微生物,发现了与电离辐射或IR的有害影响相关的指示分子结构。使用称为电子顺磁共振光谱法的测试表明,相同的分子结构为为地球上发现的每种类型的活细胞(从微生物到人类细胞)提供了抵抗力。

该研究由马里兰州Bethesda健康科学大学制服服务大学生物学家Michael J. Daly领导,研究了细菌,酵母,人类细胞和称为古细菌的单细胞生物体的结构。他们确定了用于检查的分子结构“代表三个生命领域的生物体内和内部的生物IR抗性最强的规格”。

Daly多年前就驳斥了传统的想法,即辐射暴露的危害在于DNA单链的损害。他表明问题本身不是DNA损伤,而是细胞无法修复损伤。在IR抗性生物体中,蛋白质保持功能以修复DNA损伤,允许细胞在放射线照射下存活。

Daly在2004年的一项研究中也表明,耐辐射性与锰离子的存在有关,其形成强大的抗氧化复合物。DiRuggiero在古细菌和其他细菌中发现了相同的锰配合物,支持了IR抗性通用机制的思想。他们发现复合物具有有力的抗氧化性能,其支持细胞中的蛋白质,这反过来增强了细胞修复DNA损伤的能力。
