智利大学医学博士Daniel Munoz及其同事解释说：“N-乙酰半胱氨酸不会阻止顺铂引起的耳毒性，但会改变进展过程。值得注意的是，N-乙酰半胱氨酸的使用没有任何不良反应”。

为了评估化疗后N-乙酰半胱氨酸对耳毒性的影响，研究人员随机分配了45名年龄在18岁及以上的头颈部鳞状细胞癌患者，患者使用基于顺铂的化疗方案。45例受试者接受N-乙酰半胱氨酸（n = 23）或安慰剂（n = 22）治疗。在化疗之前、期间和之后，研究人员测试了所有参与者在基线，化疗第四周以及研究完成（平均大约3个月）过程中能够听到高频（6至16 kHz）的能力。研究人员发现接受N-乙酰半胱氨酸的患者的耳毒性作用停止或不随治疗时间的延长而继续恶化。
